a night song | 2012-13
Introduction

a night song is a single movement composition for soprano and piano on fragments of poetry by the American poet E.E. Cummings (1894-1962). Text fragments from three different poems are selected and rearranged in a new text. The text fragments deal with the theme of longing and share common motifs concerning the nighttime.

The text settings are characterized by the use of expressive melodic lines with diatonic, modal and chromatic qualities. The accompaniment largely consists of static harmonic configurations. Repetition of text fragments and musical gestures provides unity within the composition. Moreover, much of the musical material used in the accompaniment derives from a single motif.
