Nächtlicher Gang (2005/2009)
Introduction

Nächtlicher Gang is a single movement composition for soprano and piano. In the piece, text fragments by the German poet Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926) are used, mostly taken from his cycle of poems 'Gedichten an die Nacht'. By selecting and rearranging text fragments certain aspects of the original context are both emphasized and altered; a new text emerges with its own ambiguous meaning. Nächtlicher Gang deals with the themes of loneliness and longing for an absent other.

The composition is divided in three sections like a miniature triptych. The side sections are characterized by expressive vocal lines. Each text fragment has its own specific accompaniment which mainly consists of static harmonic configurations. The contrasting middle section is characterized by short rhythmic outbursts. Unity within the composition is attained by repetition of text fragments and musical gestures, and by rearranging specific pitch-class structures in different textures.
